BUOYANT Burnley boss Chris Waddle has set his sights on getting off the foot of the Second Division table with a win over York on Saturday after his side collected their third straight home victory last night.

A comfortable 2-0 Auto Windscreens Shield success over Notts County, to set up a home northern quarter-final with Carlisle next Tuesday night, made it three wins out of four for the Clarets.

And Waddle is backing that form to lift his side nearer to safety, particularly with fellow strugglers Brentford and Plymouth meeting on Saturday.

"That's three clean sheets out of four games and one goal against in four games," said the Burnley player-manager, who rested himself, Chris Brass, Neil Moore, Gerry Harrison and Damian Matthew.

"It's very important that we beat York on Saturday and I am sure that if we do that, with other teams playing each other, we will get off the bottom of the table.

"That's the next priority, to get away from trouble as quickly as possible."

County were no match for a Burnley side that should have won by a far greater margin with their glut of chances contrasting with the visitors who barely had a sniff of Marlon Beresford's goal.

"We are not conceding," stressed Waddle.

"Everybody gets chances, it doesn't matter what level you play at, whether you are at Old Trafford or Liverpool.

"But we are giving away very few and creating a lot which is obviously a good sign." Darren Ward was an inspired figure in the County goal but was beaten either side of the break by Glen Little's stunning strike and an Andy Cooke effort on his return from suspension.

Waddle was pleased with his new look front pairing of Cooke and Payton, although both spurned chances.

He added: "They looked sharp and look like there's a lot of goals between them.

"There were times when Andy could have played Cookie in and Cookie could have played Andy in, but when you are up front, you want to score goals."

The contributions of Jamie Hoyland, Steve Blatherwick, Paul Smith, full debutant Mark Roberston and substitute Chris Vinnicombe were just as important as they provided confirmation that Waddle has competition for places and possibly some selection posers for the weekend.

"When players get left out some feel they have been unjustly treated or sulk but you can't fault them here.

"I was pleased with everybody who played and who came on. They have got to stay like that and when they have got the opportunity to shine again do it again," added Waddle.

"It gives me a little bit of a headache who to play Saturday but everybody says that's what they want. It's a nice situation.

"The confidence is very high and the camaraderie is excellent. The morale in the team is getting very strong which will put us in good stead for the run-in."

Burnley reserves' home game against Wrexham in the Pontin's League Cup tonight (kick-off 7.15) has been called off because of a frozen pitch.

Clarets Independent Supporters meet tomorrow at the Park View pub (7.30pm), all members and new members welcome. Discussions will include the proposed Turf Moor takeover.
