PEOPLE power has won the day for Poulton residents in their campaign for road safety measures near a dangerous junction.

Lancashire County and Wyre Borough councils this week announced a series of traffic-calming proposals in busy Hardhorn Road near its junction with Highcross Road and nearby Beech Drive, Carr Head and Oldfield Carr lanes.

Residents and parents of pupils at Carr Head and Baines schools were delighted that their 2,240-name petition and writing to MP Hilton Dawson, who arranged a public meeting, had borne fruit.

A zebra crossing in Hardhorn Road, road humps in Carr Head and Oldfield Carr Lanes, blocking off the end of Beech Drive and better signs and road-marking are all among the proposals which will be finalised after consultation with residents.

Campaigner Judith Hughes said: "I'm extremely pleased that they have listened to us. Hardhorn Road is incredibly busy, they come round the bend at speed and it's a very dangerous junction.

"We're very grateful to Hilton Dawson for helping us and to the councils for being so reasonable."

She was particularly happy about the zebra crossing and hoped for higher kerbs for better protection.

Their concern was roused after a series of minor accidents to school pupils in the area, culminating in a boy's leg being broken at the beginning of term last September.

Mr Dawson said: "I'm really delighted - it's a tribute first of all to the residents who raised the matter and articulated the problem so well and also to the officials from Lancashire and Wyre councils who came to the public meeting in November and listened, as well as to councillors, both Labour and Conservative, who worked very constructively indeed."

It was particularly important, he added, because of the proximity of two schools, where accident risks tend to be worse.
