RESIDENTS in Bamber Bridge, Preston, have slammed a decision by Baxi to shut down a social club in the heart of the community.
Locals who use the licensed function room and bowling green provided by the heating giants hit out after hearing the decision.
The Brownedge Road club, which boasts 1,200 members and is used for weddings, christenings and other special occasions, as well as being home to countless clubs and societies will be used 'to expand business', says Baxi.
Anne-Marie Hodgson, who lives on Duddle Lane, said: "I was shocked when I found out. Bamber Bridge will miss a great venue.
"Baxi seems to be taking away a facility that's good for local people. The club is the friendly side of Baxi.
"In summer we walk there and enjoy a drink while watching the bowling - it's a shame we won't be able to do it anymore."
A neighbour added: "It's a pity because it's such a good club. It's really nice to have something like that on your doorstep."
The club has been running for over 30 years but Baxi said it was no longer used by most of the workforce and would close in a couple of weeks.
A company spokesman said: "We plan to use the current structure to expand the business.
"Very few Baxi employees use the club and this agreement was made in a recent discussion at the company."
Members will be offered alternative membership at Bamber Bridge Football Club's social club.
