FURIOUS landlords in Leyland near Preston say they could face a fight for their future if a new super-pub and restaurant is built.

Early plans for the redevelopment of run-down Towngate by developers Lansbury Holdings have delighted most people after a long wait.

But part of the proposal - to put up a pub on spare land close to Lancastergate - has been met with fierce opposition.

Chris Lee, landlord of the George VI for the past four years, said he would be writing to South Ribble council, the developers and local councillors to protest.

He angrily explained: "There's no need for an extra pub. We've already got 11 drinking establishments within walking distance of the site.

"Trade is hard enough. The pie is only so big and this would take another piece off us."

Glenis Keeley, who runs the nearby Fox and Lion, said she was turned down for a licence four years ago to convert Leyland's old police station into a pub.

She said: "I was told there was no way there'd be another licence granted in Leyland as there are too many pubs.

"This is hypocritical. It's terrible. We're worried what it will do to our trade."

South Ribble council chief executive Phil Halsall said: "This scheme will revitalise the area and attract lots more people who'll be able to drink in all the pubs in the area. I doubt they'll choose just to go to one.

"It's early days. The plans may change because the whole thing is out for public consultation."
