GIRL power is set to hit St Helens College.
For a new programme to encourage girls to consider a career in engineering starts next week (January 27, 28 and 29).
The course, entitled Wise Outlook, will be based at the college's Technology Centre and will be sponsored by the Engineering Employers' Federation, the Engineering Council and the Marine Training Authority, and is partof the Women into Science and Engineering (Wise) initiative run by the Engineering Council.
Twenty-four girls, aged 13 and 14 years, from 12 schools in the area will attend the three-day workshop which is aimed at giving them practical experience of engineering.
They will be given projects to complete in either electronic or mechanical engineering under the guidance of young engineers from the industry who have already passed through St Helens College. They will also see some examples of engineering in action when they visit production lines at local companies including Pilkington and United Glass.
The event will culminate at the college's town centre campus with an exhibition and talk by Dr Mary Harris, Director General of the Year of Engineering Success, followed by an awards ceremony.
