FOAM on a stream in Golborne led Environment Agency inspectors to a factory discharging detergent.
And the trail led to a court appearance for Chilwood Limited, a detergent and packing company from Ashton, who were fined £4,000 on Friday after pleading guilty to causing polluted matter to enter Millingford Brook from its Windsor Road premises.
Carol Parker, prosecuting, said pollution officer Phil Goodwin found large amounts of foam on the surface of the stream at Helen Street Bridge in Golborne.
Following the stream he found detergent was being discharged into Millingford Brook from an outlet designed to carry only clean rainwater from the factory.
