THE arrival of the Royal Engineers in a sleepy Irish village is the backdrop to the latest play by Lancaster-based Freehold Theatre Company.
Brian Friel's 'Translations' looks at how the Royal Engineers set about renaming the Gaelic place names during an administrative exercise and end up profoundly effecting the cultural and personal relationships of those involved.
Regarded as Friel's finest play, it will be brought to life by local actors and is directed by Alan Mathews.
Said Mr Mathews: "The play is a unique blend of humanity, humour and poetic vision, making 'Translations' not only thought provoking but attractive to all ages and tastes." The first performances will be at Lancaster's Gregson Centre on February 5 and 6 before going on tour in the North West.
