LEGALISATION of cannabis was one of the more contentious issues to come under the spotlight during an inter-class debating competition at Gawthorpe High School, Padiham.
The competition, organised by the English department, was aimed at improving pupils' public speaking skills and encouraging them to use standard English and present reasoned arguments.
Years eight to 11 took part with each providing three speakers for the motion, three against and a chairman to keep order. They were also quizzed by members of the audience.
Lunchtimes and after-school periods have been used for the teams to practise their skills. They were given 50 topics from which to choose.
Year eight presented: this house believes homework serves no useful purpose; year nine: jewellery and any coats should be allowed in school; year 10: school uniform should be banned; year 11: use of marijuana should be legalised.
