A WEEKEND clampdown on late-night violence and anti-social behaviour in Accrington town centre has been hailed as a major success by police.
Eleven people were arrested for public order offences, damage and assault during Operation Valentine on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
But police reported excellent feedback from the public to the high-profile operation aimed at reassuring the public that Accrington town centre is a safe place to enjoy a night out.
A 29-year-old local man, charged with affray and assaulting an officer, was kept in custody and was due to appear before Hyndburn magistrates today .
Those bailed will appear before the court in Accrington on March 20. One youth was bailed with the condition that he does not enter Accrington town centre at the weekend.
A number of people were also warned about dropping litter and urinating in the street.
Sergeant Mark Rothwell said: "We feel that Operation Valentine has been a major success.
"Officers patrolling the streets received excellent feedback from the public who were generally very supportive and appreciative of our efforts.
"Licensees, taxi drivers and takeaway staff spoken to all reported having had a peaceful weekend."
Mounted officers and police dog handlers were involved in the three-night operation sending out a Valentine's message that troublemakers will not be tolerated.
Sgt Rothwell added: "This initiative is by no means a one-off.
"Accrington is a popular venue for many people at weekends and we are determined that their enjoyment will not be spoiled by a mindless minority."
