I READ with interest Mrs Joan McEvoy's views (Letters, February 11) on how nice the caf in Blackburn Library is and I agree entirely.

But I don't think that she is unlucky enough to have to use the lift as I have, being 80 and disabled.

I have appreciated the cafe for some time, but now, because the lift is always breaking down, I am going to be denied that pleasure. Time after time during the last few months, I have been unable to reach the caf or come down from it.

Twice in the last few months, I have had to be led out of the goods door and last week was stranded at the top. Had it not been for the kindness of a librarian, who arranged for me to be escorted to the goods entrance, I might be there yet.

I have complained to the library service's head office, who only wrote and told me that, as the lift carried so many passengers, it was bound to break down some time.

The trouble is that it is always breaking down and now I hesitate to go up to my favourite caf. Surely, a large organisation like the library should be able to get the lift repaired properly or get a new one.

I have been a member of the library for more than 70 years and now, when I am retired and disabled, I cannot get to use its assets.

Yes, it is a nice caf, but I cannot say the same for the lift, which must be depriving the caf and many disabled people of its services.
