A HIT and run driver left a 52-year-old woman with serious injuries in Morecambe on Monday. The force of the car's collision with the woman was so great that part of the driver's bumper broke off before they sped off. The woman was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with head injuries and a broken pelvis and arm. She was crossing the road near the junction between Regent Road and Osborne Road, Morecambe at about 8.40pm when the driver clipped her, just as she was about to reach the other side of the road.
"This is a serious incident and we are appealing for anyone who saw anything to come forward," said Acting Police Sergeant Colin Forsyth. "The driver must have known there was an impact with something or somebody and we certainly would urge the driver to come forward along with any other witnesses."
Another police spokesman said the snapped bumper might provide another clue: "If anyone is aware of damage to a vehicle we would ask them to call us, we are not a 100 per cent sure but we think part of the offending car's bumper was broken off as a result of the impact."
Police talked to the woman a second time this week but still have no idea of the make of car or a description of the driver who was driving towards Westgate.
The woman was still in hospital yesterday. A spokesman for Morecambe Ambulance said: "The woman had serious injuries to her right leg and pelvis. She also had slight head injuries."
Anyone with any information about the accident should call Morecambe police on 01524 63333.
