YOUNG people from around Leigh are to be given their own voice.

For after a survey showed that 70% of youngsters in the borough didn't have a clue on who to get to listen to their opinions, Young Peoples Councils are being set up.

Organised by Wigan Youth Service, young people from every part of the borough will be given the chance to voice their thoughts on issues concerning them.

The survey also showed that a massive 84% of those questions felt they did not have enough say in decisions made of their behalf, something the new scheme is expected to rectify.

Carol Stone, Head of Services for Young People, said: "Young Peoples Councils are for young people and will be run by young people. They will be whatever young people want them to be. The issues discussed, format of meetings and even the name of the council will all be decided by the young people who get involved. There will also be a range of activities and entertainment at the meetings so everyone attending can get involved and have a good time."

Each council will also have its own budget with young people making decisions on how the cash should be spent.

The first meeting in Lowton and Golborne will take place from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday, February 25, in Golborne Sports and Social Club, Stonecross Lane, Lowton.
