A PROJECT targeting "secret" gay and bisexual men in Blackburn has been introduced by the town's community health care service.
The CommuniCare HIV Prevention Team will focus on vulnerable males who may not use existing sexual health services or other forms of information or advice.
And team members will even go to known meeting areas for gays and explain that confidential help and advice is available.
The target types are those who outwardly enjoy normal lives but who may secretly meet other men in public areas, such as toilets.
The HIV team say they are a particularly vulnerable group, most of who are in a heterosexual relationship and so are placing their partners at risk.
Peter Cash is HIV prevention co-ordinator at CommuniCare's HIV Prevention Unit based at the Jarman Street centre in Blackburn.
He said: "The project aims to encourage HIV testing, promote safe sex and improve mental health. With a significant increase in the risk of suicide amongst groups of gay and bisexual men, the overall aim is to find out the level of knowledge among these men and get a sense of what they know about services available to them."
The earlier HIV is detected in gay and bisexual men, the earlier treatment can begin. Hepatitis B vaccinations are also available.
The CommuniCare workers will remain anonymous for their own safety, and will inform men of the Lesbian and Gay switchboard number.
Anyone who would like any advice or information can contact CommuniCare on (01254) 263525.
