Rosslyn Park 36 Liverpool St Helens 24 A SLIGHT improvement in the Moss Laners' away form was insufficient to gain a win at Roehampton on Saturday.
LSH played into a strong wind in the first half, and, despite conceding an early converted try, had the better of the play. A strong forward effort, led by Jim Wood and Jon Hitchen saw them take the lead with tries by Matt Liddle and Richard Nelson, the first being converted by Paul Brett. Park took a 14-12 half-time lead, however, through a try well into injury time.
The second half did not live up to expectations however, although Martin Boyd and Mike Nugent won plenty of lineout ball, the forwards generally went off the boil.
Skipper Brain Wellens who had directed play intelligently, took a shoulder knock which eventually resulted in his substitution by Ian Callaghan and the Park forwards started to dominate.
They scored twice, via a push over try and through substitute Dowse both of which Andy Maddock converted. Maddock also kicked a penalty to give the home team a 31-12 lead.
LSH hit back with a second Richard Nelson try, 31-17 before Dowse scored his second for Park. Again LSH came back, and Callaghan scored a try and nonchalantly converted it with a drop kick. Time had run out however, and although the try count was 5-4, LSH will rue their poor third quarter of an interesting match.
On Saturday LSH are at home to Otley - a difficult fixture but one which LSH must win.
