LICENSEES in Morecambe are calling time on extended pub opening hours in a bid to reduce violence in the resort. Around 70 landlords have joined forces and signed a petition calling for stricter guidelines governing late night opening.
The move comes after a summer of drunken violence in the resort and a substantial loss of trade as drinkers drift to Lancaster.
The petition has been handed to licensing magistrates and a spokesman for the landlords said that they wanted a clear distinction between pubs and clubs.
He said: "Over the last two years Morecambe has seen more and more late licences granted to pubs. At the same time we have seen an increase in violent crime, fighting, vandalism, drunkenness and anti-social behaviour. This has resulted in the decimation trade. We want to see all pubs get 11pm licenses."
