COMPUTER buff and Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has called for more technology in rural public libraries.
The self-confessed 'computer nerd' is warning that an information technology sub-class will be created in countryside areas if the government doesn't act.
The MP, who has four computers in his London office and "doesn't go anywhere without his lap-top," told a House of Commons committee that it was vital for people to have free or cheap access to IT.
"The world is shrinking as communications get faster and more sophisticated.
"We need to ensure that people in rural areas are able to use it to their best advantage and public libraries are ideal places for this.
"Because of my interest in computers and hi-tech gadgets, I know that some of this kit costs a lot of money.
"I am keen that the libraries in rural areas get as much new technology as those in urban areas before we create an IT sub-class in the countryside," he said.
The MP said one advantage of his hi-tech Commons office was being able to keep up with local affairs by reading the Lancashire Evening Telegraph on the Internet.
"I believe that bringing technology to rural libraries will give countryside areas a new lease of life," he added.
