I am disturbed to read that the open land alongside Knowlys Rd, Heysham is once more being threatened with housing developments. I grew up in the area and know it well.
The wonderful views out over the fields, across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland Mountains, is unparalleled in this district, which otherwise has a totally "built-up" promenade. It is the only stretch from Heysham Village to Bare which has not been "developed", and here lies its charm.
Visitors and residents alike flock to it precisely because of its pastoral calm, and for the unimpeded views. Years ago there were plans to build a motel on Morecambe Golf Club land (at Bare). How thankful now we must all be, that following an outcry against it, the plans were dropped.
It is a visual asset to us all, and I suggest that Raynors Field - Heysham is every bit as important.
It would, I believe, be quite wrong for eight privileged families to occupy this plum site, and by doing so deprive everyone else of the pleasure this small oasis brings.
Urban open spaces are at premium these days, it is vitally important that this little gem is not lost, do not be guided into letting any part be developed.
