LOCAL MP David Chaytor has warmly welcomed the Government's plans to combat drink-driving.
"Too many people are killed and too many lives are ruined," said Mr Chaytor.
"While drink-policy has been successful in reducing the number of deaths and injuries over the last 30 years, there has sadly been no reduction in the last three years. One in seven fatal accidents still involves a driver over the legal limit."
The Government's consultation document looks at a range of measures on enforcement, penalties, education, publicity and rehabilitation.
"By taking action on all these fronts, I hope we can make further progress in reducing the appalling toll of deaths and injuries on our roads," said the MP for Bury North.
The Government is considering reducing the blood alcohol limit from 80mg per 100ml to 50mg.
"There is evidence to suggest that a driver with blood alcohol between 50mg and 80mg is twice as likely to be involved in an accident as one who has not been drinking," said Mr Chaytor.
