WORK is underway on six purpose-designed bungalows adapted for people with severe disabilities.
The homes, at Dorothy Street in Thatto Heath, are expected to be completed in August this year and Grosvenor Housing Association, who are behind the project, are hoping they will enable people with disabilitities who are currently living in non-suitable accommodation, to live independently.
The three-person bungalows each have two bedrooms and are designed to accommodate wheelchairs with low-level fixtures and fittings. Grosvenor are also installing fibre optic IT cabling which will enable residents to use computers for things like home shopping and use of the Internet.
Grosvenor are now looking for applications from people who wish to be considered for one of the properties and have said that residents who are allocated for a bungalow before building work is complete will have the property adapted to suit their own particular needs. In addition, they are working with community groups including the St Helens Physically Disabled Society, to develop a special facility next to the new development which will include an IT training suite for local residents to use.
