PULSE - music and more, with Simon Donohue

MOVER man Sam Hazeldine has revealed how his band's excellent new single is all about bunking off French lessons at school.

The singer, who brings his crew of musicians to the Manchester Roadhouse on March 8, said the track Tricolore was intended to bring memories flooding back to all those people who ever used the study aids of the same name.

He said: "I hated French lessons at school, so I didn't tend to hang around for them.

"I would bunk off and go to the cinema or hang around the shops.

"The Tricolore books remind me not only of those lessons, but that era."

If you haven't heard of Mover so far, you should do pretty soon.

They play a refreshing blend of up-beat, Beatle-ish and generally boppy, soul-ish music.

And unlike most bands, they didn't decide on their name until they were ready to reveal themselves to the public.

Sam, a man sporting a decidedly Southern accent, said: "We couldn't think of anything to call ourselves. We eventually took our name from our first single, Mover. "We like it because that's what we want to be, movers and shakers. We don't want to be the type of band that play background music or elevator tunes, we want to make music which actually moves people."

Tricolore has already been playlisted by Radio 1 and has been given an extensive helping of exposure by the Evening Session.

The band will be performing a live session for them on Wednesday, March 4.

Tricolore is out on Monday and their debut album will be out in the summer.

Shaun fancies movie making

BLACK Grape frontman Shaun Ryder could soon be a movie mogul if plans to make a series of films in and around Manchester come to fruition.

The singer has been working on a series of scripts based around the city, said to be on a boxing theme, and is currently negotiating a deal to take them on to the big screen. A spokesman said: "Shaun's interested in directing feature films.

"He's been in the music business for a long time and this is just something that he's wanted to do."

The films will also feature soundtracks composed by Shaun and Black Grape cohort Danny Sabre.

Ed-liner!

ELECTRIC violin eccentric and former New Model Army man Ed Alleyne-Johnson calls in at Jim's Cafe, Colne, this week.

Ed designed and built his own 5-string electric violin after seeking technical advice from Fairport Convention's Ric Saunders and Dave Swarbrick.

He and Denyze will be playing material from their new album.
