A BIG noise will be created in the village of Barrowford in time for the millennium.

Peter Kendall, a brass player for more than 40 years and band manager of Nelson Brass Band, is on his way to seeing the village have its own band to herald the start of the year 2000.

The first meeting of the new band, including both experienced and novice players, was held at St Thomas' Church and attracted 12 children aged nine to 13.

Peter, of Appleby Drive, Barrowford, said: "I just thought there was a lot of musical talent and it would be a nice idea if we could get everyone together to form a band to hold a concert for the millennium.

"But if we feel we are ready. we might put on a concert this Christmas. After the millennium I don't know what will happen. That will be up to the band members to decide."

The band has the support of private music teacher Pat Longworth and Peter's entire family are getting in on the act.

His wife Alison plays baritone horn, son James, nine, plays the trombone and 11-year-old daughter Laura plays cornet.

Peter, who currently plays solo horn, says he is happy to play in the band if a conductor steps forward .

He visited local schools and handed out leaflets to promote Saturday's event and the next rehearsal will be on April 4 at 2pm at St Thomas Church.

Anyone who wants to know more about the band, whether an experienced player or newcomer, is invited to call Peter on 01282 694095.
