AN ASTLEY doctor is battling on with his one man campaign for life-saving Traffic lights at a busy village junction.
Dr Bhola Nath Varma, who has practised in the area for a quarter of a century, has launched a petition, containing hundreds of names, for lights at the Coach Road, Higher Green Lane and Manchester Road blackspot.
He has now enlisted the backing of Worsley MP Terry Lewis in his fight.
Dr Varma said: "Over the years there has been an increase in the development of housing estates in the Astley area. As a result there is more traffic and so gradually the rate of accidents has increased.
"I think the borough is fully aware that the population has steadily risen. However, over the last few years several new housing estates have been built and as such the community has increased tremendously.
"Traffic has grown to such an extent that some crossings are very dangerous. Every year many accidents have taken place at this junction.
"Traffic is so intense now that I feel it won't be long before a fatal one takes place.
"I would be grateful if lights could be installed immediately for the safety of pedestrians and road users alike."
Dr Varma, who sent his petition and wrote to the borough engineerJohn Simms, in December believes proposed plans revealed in February for a roundabout at The Straits - the Manchester Road-Church Road junction will not solve the problem.
He said: "Lots of people are of the unanimous opinion that lights are the only solution and that spending on the island experiment is a waste of public money."
Mr Lewis said: "I am very concerned about the matter and will support the representations to the council.
"I will also as a matter of urgency seek the active involvement of local councillors."
