FORESTRY experts have warned that Darwen could lose much of its woodland areas if conservation advice is ignored.
Tree cover in the borough is already low and does not always fulfil its potential as a wildlife habitat, recreation destination or a timber resource.
Now experts say that these areas could be lost unless positive steps are taken.
The Forestry Authority is offering grants to encourage landowners to help bring existing woodland into management and create new wooded areas by planting more trees.
Extra payment may be made where the wood is opened up for recreation, where it is managed for nature conservation or where planting takes place on agricultural land.
The Lancashire Woodland Project offers free advice on making the best use of land including:
Timber for use or sale
Shelter for livestock or buildings
Habitats for wildlife, including game
The project can also help with harvesting, marketing, financial and management advice as well as grant aid. For more information contact the Forestry Authority on 017687 76616.
