INMATES at a Leyland prison are looking forward to 24 hours of freedom, with a catch.
The six prisoners are to dedicate their day off to a marathon badminton session with prison officers and civilian staff at HMP Wymott.
The sponsored event, set to last 24 hours, will raise cash for local girl Samantha Renke, who suffers from brittle bones.
The event is organised by Hilary Smith, of the prison's education department, and the energetic group is hoping to raise £4,500 for 12-year-old Samantha's appeal fund.
The money will go towards a powered wheelchair so that Samantha, of Balcarres Road, Leyland, can be more independent.
Hilary said: "Samantha is my daughter's best friend and she is a lovely girl. We have received a lot of support."
Samantha's father died last year from a brain tumour which has left her mother, Ina, to bring up her two daughters. "They face a difficult future. If we can help their life become a little more simple then it will be worth it," added Hilary. Many people have pledged to support the event, which starts at 9am on Bank Holiday Monday (May 4), in the prison gymnasium.
Nearly 100 players - the rest being made up of staff and civilians - will rotate during the 24 hours. Anyone wanting to sponsor the fund can contact Hilary on 01772 421462.
