ST HELENS CC were comprehensively beaten by Bootle -probably the strongest team in the Penketh Trophy.
A painstaking knock of 64 in 112 minutes by J. Keggin contrasted sharply with M. Cockbain's quick fire 31 in 19 minutes as Bootle reached 197. Bobby Kenny once again took the bowling honours with 3-34 supported by some tidy bowling from Adam Friar (1-27) and Phil Roughley (1-32).
The St Helens batsmen made a good start through Phil Roughley (38), Ian Mackus (21), Steve Kenny (12) and Suba Banerjee (11), but with the other seven batsmen contributing only 20 runs the game came to a premature end at 109 all out.
The second team continued their winning ways with a fine home win against Bootle, Keenaghan (16) and Lower (30) started well and Gary Sheppard (39 not out) steered the side to 145 helped in two good partnerships by Paul Booth (11) and captain Ian Davies (12). Bootle were dismissed for 103 in less than 40 overs thanks to Ian Davies (3-13) and Gary Sheppard (2-13).
The third team fan club turned up in force for the Sunday fixture against Worsley. A fine 56 from opener Andrew Henderson supported by Massey (16), Elliot (12), Cadel (14), Bass (23) and Finney (15 not out) enabled Saints to declare at 173. Despite good spells from captain Brian Holmes (3-54), Daniel Massey (2-18) and Mark Tasker (2-17) the visitors held on for a draw with the last pair at the crease.
The Bank Holiday Monday fixture against Sefton drew a good crowd who were rewarded with a St Helens victory. Sefton were dismissed for 153 helped by a top score in the extras column of 38. Adam Friar (2-23), Phil Roughley (1-13), Steve Jordan (1-18) and Suba Banerjee (1-35) were the wicket takers.
The men from Windleshaw Road passed the total in 38 overs thanks to Gareth Davies continuing his good form with 51. Darren Tyms (28) Ian Mackus (54 not out) and Steve Kenny (12 not out) saw the team safely home for a well deserved win.
