A HUGE cut in the number of homes disconnected for not paying water rates was welcomed.

More than 2,000 homes in the North West were cut off in 1991/2, but that number dropped to just 495 the following year.

North West Water was commended for its efforts but industry watchdog Ofwat stressed that more had to be done for those in need.
