BILL Jacobs (LET, May 1) mentions an opinion poll that shows the government might well have had a majority of 250, instead of the present one of 179, if a General Election was held now.
Where and how, I wonder, are these opinion polls carried out - as one never hears about them until the final results are announced?
From the remarks that one hears on all sides, I would say the majority might well be lower than the original 179.
Surely, the local council elections here have shown a trend away from Labour.
I am, in any case, very sceptical about opinion polls. If a poll of a million people showed that 75 per cent of those questioned would still vote Labour, this does not prove that the next million would show the same response.
