FIRMS in Lancashire could be missing out on huge business gains because they are worried about being bitten by the millennium bug.

Computer specialist Rory Colfer is warning that many companies were spending too much time tackling the millennium computer problem and not enough on preparing their IT systems for EMU.

Mr Colfer, of KPMG Management Consulting, said that unless firms acted now to ensure their systems were ready for EMU they could miss out on potential benefits.

"The changes that EMU may bring are well known including reduced exposure to currency fluctuations and economies of scale," he said.

The fact that both issues were arising at the same time meant some companies were minimising investment in preparing for EMU.
