LEIGH, Atherton and Tyldesley are still 'red all over' after Labour's election team wiped-out all opposition.
And they have claimed a huge vote of confidence in their £150 million Xanadu snowdome complex after retaining control of all wards, despite a massive Green Party campaign.
Wigan Council is now 70 Labour, 1 Ind. Labour and 1 Liberal Democrat!
But the turn-out, along with the remainder of the country, was poor. At Abram the percentage poll was only 11.7.
The Green Party claim the Hope Carr vote which saw Labour's Kevin Anderson returned was a 'No' vote for the controversial project!
The Green's Chris Maile, who increased his vote from a by-election last year, said : "How can they claim a victory for Xanadu when more people voted against Labour. Both the opposition parties were standing against Xanadu"
Labour leader Peter Smith was jubliant about the evening's results, seen as a mini-referendum on the leisure project.
"The people in this part of the Borough have today had their chance to say what they think about Xanadu. The results show what they think.
"It's now up to Labour councillors to make sure that all the benefits in terms of jobs, and the chance for access to such a wonderful facility ,filters down to the people of Leigh and district.
"We will make sure that happens."
After the count Green and Labour Party activists complained about the conduct of each others supporters at the count and several polling stations.
Returning Officer Stephen Jones said complaints should have been made during the day.
"But from what I have heard, I don't know whether the activity complained of would have anything to do with me at all."
The police are taking no action. LIGHTSHAW
