TWO women who beat cancer are running for joy - and to raise cash in a bid to find a cure for the disease.

Susan Waddington, of Clayton-le-Moors, and Alison Hodson, of Rishton, will be joining the Race For Life in aid of Imperial Cancer Research and organised by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

The two will be stepping out at Witton Country Park in Blackburn on July 1 to pound the 5km course to raise some much-needed cash.

Susan and Alison have already raised £1,500 for the charity by taking part in other Race for Life events.

Both women believe their determination to overcome the disease helped them through the most traumatic time of their lives.

Susan, 42, said: "When I found out I had cancer I was absolutely devastated. I always thought it wouldn't happen to me. But believe me it can happen to anyone of any age."

Susan was given the all-clear two months ago after discovering a lump which was diagnosed as a malignant tumour. She was undergoing chemotherapy treatment when she took part in her first Race For Life.

"I ran most of the race and walked the rest, which proves that chemotherapy is not as bad as most people think," she said. "Having cancer doesn't mean you have been handed a death sentence. It is possible to beat it and I just hope others realise that."

Entry forms for the race are available from town halls and leisure centres across the borough or potential runners/ walkers can telephone the entry hotline on 0990 134314.
