LEIGH ATHLETIC are celebrating a treble triumph. They followed their Lancashire Amateur League Premier Division title with wins in two Cup Finals.

Athletic beat First Division champs Rivington 2-0 to take the Open Cup, Dean Lee and Steve Kidd getting the goals, Gordon Spowart, Jimmy Evans and Richard Wilson in spanking form.

Then, for the first time in the 112 years of the comp, they beat Hindley Town - a team boasting a sprinkling of semi-pro guests - to take the Wigan Cup. The match went to penalties, Andy Pickles, MoM Dave Stead and Gordon Walker making them count.

BAD weather has led to a hectic backlog of matches in the Atherton Charity Cup. But, with the semi-finals due next week, the picture is becoming clearer.

They will be staged at Alder House next Wednesday and Thursday (7.30pm) - Tyldesley United or Atherton Town A v Little Hulton, Leigh Athletic or Hindley Town v Daisy Hill or Howe Bridge, or Three Crowns or Pennington.
