LEIGH RMI have parted company with assistant manager Kevin Keelan.

For some time it has been obvious the partnership between boss Steve Waywell and his deputy has not been harmonious

despite the club having their best ever season - finishing third in the Premiership.

"It has just not worked out," admitted Waywell. "But I don't want to comment too much about it other than to say our ideas clashed on important issues. I have brought in Gerry Luczka and he will help Mick Higgins and myself on the coaching side."

Luczka, who left Atherton LR earlier in the season after a second spell in charge, is recognised as being an expert in the local scene.

That is an area sadly lacking in the RMI network and was clearly demonstrated when one of last term's stars, Eric Rostron, almost slipped through the net.

"I have already introduced several young players to the club," said Luczka. "But this is only one aspect of my role. I will be involved in coaching and have an input in team affairs.

"I have monitored Leigh's progress over the past season and I can only say how pleased I am to be joining such a prolific club with so much potential."

Waywell has had a busy time drawing up his retained list. He is rewarding his players by keeping them all, although Graham Hill, Mick Wallace, Stuart Locke and Dave Ridings are to be offered new contracts. Central defender Mark Schofield and midfield player Ian McInerney are still on the transfer list.

"We have not received any inquiries for either player," he said. "I will be looking to strengthen my squad anyway, with a striker, wide man and utility player at the top of my list."
