IMPROVING the scenery of Wyre has been on the timetable at various schools this week.
Pupils from Baines High School in Poulton have set up their own sixth form group to carry out conservation tasks around the borough.
They are getting together with Wyre countryside rangers one afternoon a week and are also improving the school's woodlands in a bid to create a resource area for use by future pupils.
Another project is to turn a plot of school land into a wildflower and wood carving area.
Wyre's countryside manager mark MacGregor said the partnership allows students to get involved and gain practical experience in caring for their environment. "The projects will not only assist students with their present day day studies but will also be of great benefit for future pupils and the local community," he added.
Meanwhile, there were deserved celebrations at Fleetwood High School and Burn Naze County Primary, the two winners of Wyre's environmental challenge.
The idea was for pupils to design a wildflower meadow in or around school grounds.
Entries had to include plans of the area, a survey of existing plant species and a description of how they wanted the area to look in the future.
One school which entered, Poulton C of E, was also chosen to have its designs transferred on to stain glass windows which will form the entrance to Fleetwood's Environmental Education Centre.
Mark MacGregor said the standard of entry and enthusiasm for the competition was very high.
He added: "We wanted teachers and pupils to think about how they can improve their own school environment and this has certainly been the case."
