PEOPLE looking to spend a penny are being left red faced by a loo-ny council blunder.
Confusing new signs at the toilets in Sunnyhurst Woods, Darwen, point in the wrong direction, meaning many woman have been using the men's facility - complete with urinals - and vice versa.
Maureen Roberts, 62, a Lancashire Evening Telegraph community correspondent, of Cavendish Street, Darwen, is just one visitor who has been caught out by the mix up.
She said: "I use the toilets every day when I walk my dogs in the woods.
"A little boy pointed out my mistake and told me I had been in the gents. The old stone engraved signs are in the right place but are very faded and so most people have been going off the new one. I think its quite comical and luckily I didn't bump into any men."
Linda Winder, owner of the Old England Kiosk, which is situated next to the loos, is also being kept amused by the confusion.
"It's hilarious to watch people as they stand there scratching their heads and wondering which door to go in," she said.
"The toilets have been there for nearly a century. Before the new sign was put up a month ago many people didn't know they existed. Now they can get to them but often end up in the wrong one.
"The other day a group of children were running around like little ants trying to work out which side to go in and even the teacher got it wrong.
"It's funny but on a more serious note it could prove very embarrassing."
