I WAS astounded to read J Lee's remarks in "Promises worthless" (Letters, May 14) particularly since this disinformation is coming from the Tory camp whose hard-faced attitude led them to such a massive and overwhelming rejection by the British public.

Let me give some facts to Mr Lee since these are what he obviously wants.

First, by cutting red tape in the NHS, £100 million has been saved which so far has treated 100,000 extra patients.

Secondly, this Government has saved £10 million from the inefficient Tory fund-holding practices and is using it to treat breast cancer which is a severe worry to many women today.

Lastly, Health Minister Frank Dobson knew he could not cut the patient waiting lists in a year and right from day one of the Labour government, has repeatedly said so.

After all, one year of a progressive and radical government could not make up for 18 years of wasteful Toryism, but, at least when the five year period is up, the waiting lists and better health care will be seen to have been achieved.
