GLEN Chapple believes he can force his way back into the England frame.

The 24-year-old paceman, touted as international material two years ago, has been left behind after a disappointing campaign last summer, but he served up a reminder of his all-round talents at Chelmsford yesterday as Lancs assumed control of their championship clash with Essex.

Chapple, recalled after injuries to Peter Martin and Ian Austin, destroyed the home side with 5-49 - his first five wickets haul in nearly two years - took three catches and was even ready to go in as nightwatchman.

"I've never had a day like it, never had a hand in eight wickets before," he said.

"Everything went right for me and thankfully I did all I could with the chance I was given - now I just have to hope it's enough to keep me in the team.

"I feel fit and much better than 12 months ago. I think I can build on this and get wickets consistently this summer and if I do that, although I'm down the pecking order with England, I believe I can get back up there. I'm still very ambitious."

Chapple's efforts helped reduce Essex to 242 all out and then Mike Atherton and Nathan Wood took Lancashire to 36-0.

But both openers were quickly out this morning both falling victim to Mark Ilott.

That left Lancashire 42-2.
