ENVIRONMENTAL watchdogs have told North West Water to improve standards at Burnley and Hyndburn sewage works because of the discharge into rivers.

The problems are highlighted in a letter to Hyndburn MP Greg Pope, who is demanding urgent action.

The Environment Agency has told the water company to target "environmental improvements" on the "poor quality of the River Calder downstream of Hyndburn sewage works."

It says improvements need to be made to the treatment of sewage at Burnley and Hyndburn sewage works before discharge into the rivers .

It also calls for improvements to a number of "unsatisfactory" overflows to the River Calder and Hyndburn Brook.

Mr Pope said: "It appears that inadequately treated sewerage may be finding its way into these water courses."
