KIM Rostron kept alive her chances of retaining the English Ladies Amateur Golf Championship after qualifying for today's matchplay stages.

The Clitheroe golfer followed up her opening round 74 with a three-over-par 77 in yesterday's second qualifying round for a 36 hole total of 151.

Rostron, who captured the crown at Saunton a year ago, has been drawn to play Porters Park's Lorna Nelson in the last 32 at the Walton Heath course in Surrey.

Curtis Cup star Elaine Ratcliffe continued her domination, striding into the match play stages as top qualifier. The 25-year-old Cheshire champion from Sandiway followed up her opening round 71 with a one under par 73 yesterday for a two-round total of 144.

Ratcliffe was always in command after three birdies in the opening seven holes.

That gave her top spot by three strokes from Derbyshire's Lisa Walters with former Gloucestershire champion Kathryn Hamilton and Fiona Brown of Heswall, Cheshire in joint third place a further three strokes adrift.

Former British champion Emma Dougleby and last year's runner-up Kate Burton survived a sudden death play-off to make it into the knock-out phase.
