ATHERTON are living dangerously. They had a real scare before beating Heaton in the Abbot Ale National Knockout - their third scare on the trot!

They scraped home by seven runs after having the Bolton League side on the ropes at 125-9 chasing a target of 162.

But the final pair provided a sting in the tail, adding 30 priceless runs.

Jonathan Harrop hit 32 for Atherton, Jonathan Fearick added 30 and Andy Hall 28. Fearick took 3-27, Paul Brown 2-27 and Rob Merga 2-28.

In the second round, played in midweek, Atherton sneaked a victory by losing fewer wickets - for the second straight match.

Clifton hit 142-8, Paul Walsh taking 4-16. In reply, the home side reached 142-6 thanks to Chris Partington (34) and Greg Greenough (38).
