BRITISH beef could be making a come-back in Bury.
Councillors in the borough are to be asked to consider whether or not they wish to change their current ban following a decision by 26 other authorities around the country to reinstated the home grown meat over the last 12 months.
Bury's current ban was introduced in December 1995 as a direct result of the BSE crisis. Since then local schools have not served beef of any kind, British or foreign.
However, next Thursday (June 4), the Council's Competitive Services Committee will be asked to look at the re-introduction of beef, subject to a number of precautionary measures. There would be no intention to bring back offal, sausages or manufactured dishes containing beef, such as burgers.
Also, in order to cater for staff or children who might not want beef, a second hot dish, plus a salad dish, would always be available on schools menus.
