A SHUT-DOWN Bury factory which has become a magnet for firebugs is to be demolished.
The decision, taken by the former owners of Wilcox Drums, comes following the latest in a series of blazes at the derelict works in Park Road.
On Tuesday night (May 26), fire crews spent several hours fighting a fierce blaze which ripped through the ground and first floors of the premises.
In fact, the building was so unstable firefighters did not enter inside for fear of it collapsing.
The fire was the third in as many weeks at the factory, which shut down several months ago.
After Tuesday's outbreak, fire chiefs and Bury Council building control inspectors visited the site.
Assistant Divisional Officer John Beryl, attached to Bury fire station, said: "We've had a number of fires there. Kids just get inside and set fire to the building which I believe is in a dangerous condition now.
"Derelict buildings pose dangers for young children. At this one there are holes in the floor and a lot of debris about. Children should keep away."
Yesterday, local authority building control officer Mr John Jones said the owners of the site had decided to demolish the building, rather than repair it.
Before closing down, Wilcox was involved in the recycling and reconditioning of steel and plastic drums.
