HAYDOCK lifted the annual UGB seven-a-sides competition for the second time in four years, beating Haresfinch in the final.

Earlier, the 10-team competition had been divided into two five-team qualifying competitions. Blackbrook topped Group A ahead of Portico, Pilkingtons, Clock Face and Ashton Bears, while Haydock won Group B from Haresfinch, UGB, Parkside Golborne and Parr Hare & Hounds.

In the semi-finals Haydock toppled Portico 28-12, while Finch upset favourites Blackbrook, coming from 20-12 down to triumph 24-20.

Having won the sides' group game by a single conversion at 16-14, Haydock started the final as slight favourites and fully justified the tag with an impressive performance.

With the slope in their favour in the first half, the Yickers never looked back after a whirwind start, racing into a 20-0 half-time lead.

Finch hit back in the second period but never looked likely to overhaul Haydock who ran out worthy winners by 28-10.

Haydock's Gary Tither took the Player of The Tournament award.
