PRECIOUS pets can be remembered at a special memorial enclosure in Worden Park in Leyland.

A pet remembrance scheme is among the projects which could be given the go-ahead in the Leyland park if a £1 million lottery bid is agreed.

And it wouldn't be the first time Worden Park has been used as a place where pets are remembered.

Parks manager Paul Walker said: "The Farington family used to use an area of the park as a pet cemetery for the family pets when they lived in Worden Park.

"The park is used by lots of local people for walking their dogs, and we have no doubt some people would like to remember their pets in the park.

"A pet cemetery just isn't feasible so a different approach has been taken.

"A lot of people remember relatives with benches inside the walled garden, and we would like to do something similar.

"The plan is a very good idea but needs to be carefully managed."

A revised bid to the lottery's Heritage department reveals £1,775,000 plans for a new bowling green, bandstand and kitchen garden, which would be created with improvements to pathways and road management.

The council needs to find £450,000 as part of the grant regulations. The pet remembrance project, it is proposed, would be financed out of the council's contribution with volunteer support.

But plans for a mountain bike trail, a new car park and trim trail were all axed by the council, who would prefer to spend some of the cash on additional dog waste bins and refurbishment of buildings on the park.
