COUNCIL chiefs are gunning for cowboy builders - and hope a posse of householders will help them.
Bury Council is urging locals to take a few simple precautions after complaints of poor quality work by so-called builders, or problems occurring after completion.
The council has also given its backing to new moves by the Government to stamp out cowboy builders.
A consultation document has been put forward which looks at a number of ways to stamp out what has become a major problem in the building industry.
Bury Council's public protection spokesman, Councillor Mike Connolly said: "Dealing with rogue builders is an issue which urgently needs to be tackled.
"We are happy to give our support to any scheme which prevents the distress and financial loss which can be suffered at the hand of the these people."
Coun Connolly said that a few simple precautions could stop householders from falling victim to the cowboys.
Always ask for an address and telephone number. Do not rely on mobile phones only.
Ask about guarantees and insurance.
Prior to work beginning, ask for locations of other work carried out.
When work is complete ensure that proper invoices with VAT numbers are produced.
Finally, if in doubt, find another contractor.
