GROUNDWORK staff, volunteers and members of the local community are preparing to do battle with an 'invader' which is destroying local vegetation.
Himalayan Balsam grows to two-three metres in height, it chokes vegetation, displaces native species and reduces wildlife interest.
The clean-up at Newton Lake, part of the Chairman's Challenge Initiative sponsored by Allied Domecq, is being organised by Sankey NOW River Valley Initiative (RVI). And the clearance will enable the native vegetation to regenerate and improve the improvement of the environment.
The 'Balsam Bash' will take place at Newton Lake on Saturday, June 6, between 10am and 1pm. Anyone who would like to take part should wear suitable clothing and footwear. Tools, protective gloves and refreshments provided.
