WIGAN has honoured it's most famous son. A plaque celebrating the birth of George Formby was unveiled last week, marking the birthdate of the actor/comedian on May 26 1904.
Our George was born at 3 Westminster Street, the eldest of seven children.
The house is no more but the plaque was fixed on the nearest available spot, a wall of the Douglas Valley Nursery, opposite Central Park.
The initiative came from the national George Formby Society, with the support of the council and co-owners of the nursery.
George's career spanned forty years, becoming by 1939 Britain's most popular and highest-paid entertainer. He appeared in 21 hit films, made more than 230 records, and appeared in two Royal Command performances.
He died on March 6 1961 aged 56 and is buried in Warrington Cemetery. At his funeral an estimated 100,000 mourners lined the streets.
