A THORNTON operatic group has called for a new theatre in Wyre to cope with the number of groups trying to put on shows.
Tony Stuart, spokesman for Thornton Cleveleys Operatic Society, has revealed they are encountering many problems with staging performances.
He said: "There is no real venue for groups like us to perform apart from the Marine Hall in Fleetwood, which gets very busy.
"Lots of groups are clamouring for theatres to use but I believe Wyre Borough Council is considering a Lottery bid to create a new venue.
"Poulton has no stage to perform on and there really aren't any other suitable venues."
Honorary president of the group, Ralph Duxberry, added: "There are many rumours flying around.
"It would stimulate all of the artistic talent in the borough if we had a theatre like the old Orion, which is now a bingo hall."
A spokesman for Wyre Borough Council said: "We are surprised at the suggestion that the group are having difficulty.
"The Marine Hall is extremely popular but there are plenty of chances for block bookings of this kind so long as we get enough notice.
"The council is already working on proposals to develop the Marine Hall with Arts Lottery Funding and is involving local groups and associations in the process."
Thornton Cleveleys Operatic Society's Pirates of Penzance combines the original music and songs with grossly exaggerated humour.
The show is on at the Marine Hall until Saturday (June 6).
