THE dismal performance of East Lancashire companies in this year's Queen's Awards for Industry has prompted a rallying call.

Despite success in previous years, not one local firm won an award in the 1998 batch of awards for export, technology or environment.

"We have got some of the best companies in the UK in East Lancashire but in true local style they always seem to hide their lights under bushels," said Derek Holt, information manager Business Link East Lancashire.

"Receiving a Queen's Award means the company and its employees are recognised as being the best and winners get extensive publicity."

Business Link is now hoping to encourage a record number of firms to apply for the 1999 awards.

The export award is open to firms which have seen exports increase substantially over recent years, the environment award is for firms which have developed products or processes that have led to environmental benefits and the technology award is aimed at innovative products and processes.

Companies which want to apply for a detailed information pack should contact Business Link East Lancashire on 0800 696696.
