A DRAMATIC midnight transplant failed to save the life of TV star Russell Harty, who died in hospital in Leeds.

The Blackburn-born broadcaster died from liver failure and hepatitis, which he was believed to have contracted while filming in Europe.

Doctors could not save the former Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School pupil despite rushing a suitable liver 200 miles to Leeds for the emergency transplant.
