OPEN letter to Charles Wilson, Director of Development - Lancaster council.
It has recently come to my notice that Mr Pearson and yourself were approached several years ago with the proposal to build 'Freeport' in Morecambe before the Fleetwood centre was built. I cannot recollect any mention of this approach being made to councillors, nor does there seem to be any minute relating to it. This would obviously have been a massive investment for Morecambe, when the whole of the old railway station site was derelict.
The millions of people it would have brought to the resort with an obvious spin off for local traders, as well as the considerable jobs provided would have made it a crucial proposition to any economic developments within Morecambe. Why weren't councillors told of the approach, and why were the developers advised against investing in Morecambe at a time when we were desperately looking for development partners?
Cllr P Heath,
on behalf of the Independent Group.
